More on Grants “out there”

September 30, 2010

Good morning Jennifer,

There are some organizations out there that are talking Grants, but this is very “stone soupish.” Stone Soup is the old European story of two bedraggled soldiers who after a hard war walked through many impoverished countrysides to return home. People all over were destitute and kept anything of value even food under the table.

Certainly no food for strangers whatsoever, even soldiers who fought for us.

The hungry soldiers proposed they could make a wonderful soup from stones, if only someone could produce a cauldron and a few sturdy timbers to lift it above a small fire. Reluctantly someone did have a cauldron. Next water was added, and the stirring process began with frequent tasting. Needed a bit of salt.

Does anyone have salt, and reluctantly again some villager had salt, more stirring and tasting and it needed perhaps a few potatoes, could anyone find a few potatoes, yes I have some, and so you get the idea, eventually a satisfying soup was made.

To me these grant programs are groping, begging just like the soldiers because I don’t think anyone is really coughing up the money, except Dr. Reed, who did his last case for 5000 (out the door). This included anesthesia, use of  the facility, 20 hours of RN private duty nursing care, and patient followup for 7 days.

We had given generous discounts to many patients, close to 150, when we received funds for testicular donation, but the lab says testes exposed to estrogens are not suitable for their protocol.

Last week, a patient has vacated the Grant offering we had, because she cannot lift her weight from 118 pounds for a 5’8″ frame to be in better shape for surgery. If you call the office or write me, I can give you the particulars, not about the patient, but about what we could do for you.

Yes, we still pray, and yes we are still doing individual consideration for serious, needy, worthwhile candidates during these very difficult economic times.

Sincerely,

Harold M. Reed, M.D.
