April 15, 2012
My name is Newt and I am a FTM. I have been on hormone therapy for approximately 4 years now. I would like to get the reassignment surgery done, but I would like to get some more information first, please?

Here are my questions:

1) What is the total cost to get the double mastectomy, the hysterectomy, and the penile implant/phalloplasty with urethra extension (for standing urination)?

2) As I was navigating your website, I noticed you offer grant and financing programs for the reassignment surgeries. Could I please get more information on those programs and how they work?

3) I also read a few blogs of people getting ALL of the reassignment surgeries done in once shot. Is this possible and if so, what are the risks and how long would the surgery be to do it all at once?

I have read through your website and I have a few questions about the FTM penile implant?

1) Will I be able to get an erection naturally or will I have to use a pump of sorts?

2) Will I be able to penetrate (this is a must for me, as I’m sure it is for all men)?

3) Will I be able to feel all of the same things as all other “natural” men (sensation and pleasure)?

I have done so much research on this. I’ve done a lot of soul searching and thinking about all of this and this is something I desperately want/need to do. Having the reassignment surgery (as quickly and completely as possible) would solve SO many of my life’s problems.

I want to thank you SO much in advance for taking the time to hear me out and respond to my inquiries.

I await your reply.

Sincerely,

Newt

April 15, 2012

Good morning Newt,

Thank you for your interest in what we do. Please review the attached. Having simultaneous surgery is never a good idea, more risks and complications, even in he best of hands. Knowing not what to do is as important as knowing what to do.

If there is further interest, I am available for consultation and our fee is 250.

Sincerely,

Harold M. Reed, M.D.

Hi Dr. Reed:

I did post a letter and hope I posted it in the right place ( You can post this)

Dear Dr. Reed,

As you know my GRS surgery was April 08, 2011 and I am recovering nicely now. I am happy to report that my dililating has improved. I ‘m currently using the #3 and #4 Dililator and with the # 2 I have almost 5″ of depth. I know that I still have a lot more stretching to go in order to get more width and depth, so I can get the wider dililators deeper. I have had intercourse 5 times and the last time was really nice but I know this is going to take some practice. My boyfriend really enjoyed the experience and I’ve found that being on my tummy (approached from behind) is thus far the most relaxing and enjoyable for me.

The last time (a few days ago) was very pleasant and I think I’m going to be orgasmic in the future.

Everyone one on your staff did an outstanding job and I was very impressed by your extremely high level of professionalism and care. I’m really looking forward to coming back to Miami for a follow up visit.

xoxo,

Jamie

April 24, 2011

I am in therapy now and have been since February, will start hormones in May 2011, and I will begin my real life experience of living as a woman full time when I leave the military next spring. I am 53 years old, excellent health, 162 lbs, due to daily aerobic workouts, non-smoker, very healthy diet.
Specific_Questions: Dr Reed, I am beginning to do my research as to where to go for my eventual SRS. So far everything I know I have learned from online forums and the recommendations of other trans women, and it’s time for me to begin asking my own questions. 2 questions for now – I am interested in any SRS procedure which will yield not only a sensate clitoris but to be self lubricating as well. What is your method for achieving a lubricious vulva, and what is the likelihood of success in achieving this for the average patient? What are the limiting factors? Second question – there is much talk among trans women (and also among surgeons) as to whether a 2 stage vaginoplasty/labioplasty done during the same surgical visit is desirable, appropriate or even necessary. What is your view on this? Thank you, Madoline

Good afternoon Madoline,

Based on work with about 500 vaginioplasty procedures, I believe a sensate clitoris is virtually a given.

Please bear in mind most gynecologists use water soluble lubricant such as KY-jelly to examine a natal female. Only during arousal is there sufficient lubrication based upon Bartholin’s and possibly Skene’s glans which natal men do not have.

We can evert the urethral mucosa which creates a moist appearance but may or may not be adequate for penetration, given the possibility of pre-orgasmic emission from your partner.

Same for colonic vaginioplasty as I do not know of any urologist who when examining the rectum with a gloved finger does not use lubricant.

We are proponents of the 2 stage procedure. Seeing patients done elsewhere with ostensibly one stage vaginioplasty who need a touch up is a common occurrence in our practice.

The week commencing May 2nd, I believe we have 2 patients on the schedule who are seeking revision. Like they say when your plane has landed, be careful accessing the overhead racks as luggage tends to shift in flight. Same for vaginioplasty.

Have a restful Easter Sunday,

Harold M. Reed, M.D.

Dr. Reed,

i have been looking over your site today. I have a few questions i would like to ask.
1. i noticed that your sites says you only do ‘below the waist’ surguries. if i find a need for facial and thrachea shaving to complete my process, do you have a suggestion for a place to do sucha procedure?

2. i have not started therapy or hormones as of yet, i saw on the site something about your office being capable of hormone therapy. how much are those costs? and could you explain more about it.

3. i saw the current price for a MTF surgury was $14,500. What does that include? I am working on a budget with my mate so that i can accomplish this goal. we are trying to find the total price for what is needed.

4. is there a place that i can bank sperm for a year or two without it being over-expensive? my mate and i wish to have kids one day, but we want to wait until after my change is complete. Most places we looked into forced you to keep your sperm in the bank for 3 years. or at least pay for 3 years time before you could remove it.

5. I am in need of electrolysis. I am wondering if your office does only ‘touch-up’ work or if they are willing to do it all. i am willing to pay for what needs to be done, i just am wondering the best courses of action and for budgeting purposes the prices.

if you could respond to these questions, i would be much apprecitive. As you may have figured out, in sending this second e-mail i am expressing an interest in your clinic. if the prices are reasonable i am willing to travel down to florida.

my mate and i were planning a move to Denver for a year or two to get what was needed for me to be who i am fully. Florida is closer. We are willing to spend as much time as we need to whereever we travel for this. I just want to make sure i am getting the right care for my needs. We are planning the move for the end of april. and we will stay until i have gotten what is needed for me. Denver was our goal location because they have a fairly large trans communtiy there and are more open to alternative lifestyles than down here in Georgia.

thank you for your time,
Saradale,

January 30, 2011

Good morning Saradale,

Thank you for your interest in what we do.

Taking your thoughtful questions in the order posed…

1. i noticed that your sites says you only do ‘below the waist’ surgeries.
if i find a need for facial and trachea shaving to complete my process,
do you have a suggestion for a place to do sucha procedure?

Try Dr. Toby G. Mayer, Beverly Hills, Ca. (800 854 8823)

2. i have not started therapy or hormones as of yet, i saw on the site something
about your office being capable of hormone therapy. how much are those costs?
and could you explain more about it.

We do hormones. A letter of therapy clearance is required by a licensed therapist with a doctoral degree. Our fee is 250 for consultation, and 600 per year to follow you with needed lab tests, office visits, prescriptions, counselling, numerous telephone calls, and medical records documentation. The 600 fee is billed 3 months after your initial visit.

Lab tests are an out of pocket expense as is the medication. We may recommend a laboratory, but you can have them done at a nationally recognized laboratory of your choice.

3. i saw the current price for a MTF surgery was $14,500. What does that include? I am working on a budget with my mate so that i can accomplish this goal. we are trying to find the total price for what is needed.

This includes surgery, anesthesia, use of the facility, private duty RN care overnight with myself in attendance as well, and any followup care I provide for the immediate post-operative period, a touch up 3 months after complete wound healing usually 4 months later, and we do recommend general anesthesia (fee 600). If local is used, no charge. Not included are a complete set of medical stents (6) for 500, hotel accommodations (about 75 dollars a night at the Baltic Hotel), and out of pocket expenses for food and medications, travel etc, continuity of care by others or the unlikely
possibility of a hospital admission.

4. is there a place that i can bank sperm for a year or two without it being over-expensive?
my mate and i wish to have kids one day, but we want to wait until after my change is
complete. Most places we looked into forced you to keep your sperm in the bank for
3 years. or at least pay for 3 years time before you could remove it.

Good idea. Please go on line and A-B the different facilities. .

5. I am in need of electrolysis. I am wondering if your office does only ‘touch-up’ work
or if they are willing to do it all. i am willing to pay for what needs to be done,
i just am wondering the best courses of action and for budgeting purposes the prices.

If you schedule for surgery, Anne at our office will do electrolysis. She is very efficient and in my opinion the best. Her fees are quite reasonable and her treatment very effective because she uses local anesthesia and can use higher settings. Much less likelihood of regrowth and a more pleasant experience all around.

Have a restful weekend,

I am currently on hormones and testosterone blockers, and live as a female full-time. I am wishing to have the orchiectomy procedure, so that I can discontinue the use of spironolactone, and lessen my estrogen intake. My question is in regards to cost, if $2500 is still the current price. Thank you in advance. Ethan

January 27, 2011

Good morning Ethan

Thank you for your interest in what we do, several orchiectomies every month. Among the advantages are the feminzing effects, discontinuation of a testosterone blocker and reduction of estrogens by a third. Our fee for orchiectomy is 2,500 which includes local anesthesia with IV sedation, use of the facility, surgery and any followup care I provide.

You will also be credited immediately a 1000 discount to your future vaginioplasty in addition to any other individual consideration offered at the time.

We do recommend you stay at one of our 2 recommended hotels for 2 days afterwards.

As this is irreversible surgery, we do require 2 letters of licensed therapy clearance, one written by a therapist with a doctoral degree and the other by a therapist with at least a masters degree. If need be, we can arrange for therapy evaluation in the greater Miami area.

We have availabilities for orchiectomy almost every week.

After reading the attached, if you believe I am the doctor for you, please initiate a consultation over the phone with our office by sending us your name, address, and telephone number in an envelope along with a check for 250. We’ll
get started ASAP. We’ll have a lot to talk about.

And want to come to you in the near future for my gender reassignment surgery. Thanks in Regards, Cassandra

January 22, 2011

Good morning Cassandra,

We no longer have grant funds to dispose as testicular research was
suspended as few years ago. Patients who are destitute do not do well
as they have no funds available for continuity of care and they try to skimp
on our recommendations with often disastrous results.

Perhaps here is some good news. This April as posted on our web-site
http://srsmiami.com/ we are having a promotional offer if you stay at the Baltic Hotel
for your convalescence.

We have noted that 50% of our patients come in with a sponsor. Could be
a spouse, loved one even Mom and Dad, friend, business partner, or
church group.

Hi Dr. Reed!!!

I am coming up on my first year of hormones but I have been living full time as a woman for a year and 7-8 hours a day for 2 years before that. I am currently on state medicaid due to being on SSI, and i am under the Care of Dr. Jessica Reynolds at the Pacific Medical First hill clinic in Seattle, WA.

Specific_Questions: I have known my entire life that I was supposed to be female. I was finally able to be myself, but know I need a vaginoplasty to feel complete. I have my nurse practioner who is my general medical provider, and Dr. Reynolds for my hormonal therapy. They are both more than willing to write anything to help me reach my goals as they know I need this. My problem is I am on medicaid and unable to work due to unexplained blackouts that dr.s have attempted to diagnose for going on 5 years. It is not a form of seizure. My question is this, Do you know of any organization that would fund my having surgery, that I could apply to. Being in a male oriented body is a living hell for me and always has been. Being me is the greatest feeling in the world. Dr. Reynolds is also looking into resources for me to have this done.

Good morning Marti,

Thank you for your interest in what we do. You do need to be in good control and have a letter of medical clearance from an internist with reference to a stress EKG.

Do not undertake this until we speak.

Happy Thanksgiving Dr Reed!!!!
Wow its been 5 years 8 month since that big event March 22 2005 MTF in your office. I, just wanted you to know I,am doing great and continue to appreciate very much your help concern and expertise .You are truly a professional in female genitalia. Very often I, think about you. How can I ever forget. Good Job Dr Reed. Have a great Thanksgiving to you and all your staff.

November 26, 2010

Stephanie,

You are the only patient who has written to wish me a Happy Thanksgiving, (but it’s early, ha) and for that I will remember you always.

Here’s what I wrote yesterday for our MTF-SRS-FTM group.

It’s harvest time and we are thankful. Possibly the most important non secular holiday in the United States. A time to reach out to loved ones even with a phone call, or better yet seated by your side. Perhaps this is a metaphor for taking stock of our lives, how far we have come thus far, our many accomplishments, productions, and to reflect also upon our goals and how to realize these goals. For life, for opportunity, we give thanks. And perhaps even a time to invite that lonely soul to the dinner table and re-instill his/her confidence in the world and provide a few moments of cordiality. Who knows, they may pass it on.

Again thank you ever so much for your kind remembrance,

Harold M. Reed, M.D.
