Dear Dr. Reed,
Am contemplating having a Male to Female Vaginoplasty with you this December. What advice can you give me regarding hair removal (electrolysis) on the penis and scrotum. Sharon
We certainly do recommend all hair on the penile shaft and scrotum be removed, as well as some hair in the perineum, area between the anus and scrotum. Hair down there is not very lady like often some perineal skin is brought into the vagina for a smooth transition. Pubic hair growing in the vagina is not very pleasant during penetrating sex. And the tugging may even be painful. The concept that hair can be removed by scraping in our experience produces varying results. Posted below is a photo showing pubic hair coming out of the vagina on a patient done abroad. We have found electrolysis done after application of numbing cream which permits higher settings works best. But certainly a skillful laser technician should be equally capable. In our office electrolysis can usually be completed in 3 sessions. Remember “10%” of the hairs may grow back, so ideally electrolysis or laser should be started a few months before vaginoplasty, and allow for one touch-up. Our on web-site srsMiami we have a diuagram showing an outline for areas to be included in hair removal (epilation).
Hoping this is of help,
Harold M. Reed, M.D.
