Dr. Reed, Am a candidate for Male to Female Surgery Vaginoplasty. How Deep can you make me?
Good morning Rhonda,
Every MTF patient asks about Vaginoplasty Depth. As an approximate guide, your depth achieved in surgery (expressed in inches) is about your height in feet plus your inches expressed as a fraction. So if you are 5 feet 9 inches think 5″ and 9/12″ or 5 3/4 inches. Hope that makes sense. Remeber in surgery, you can’t say “ouch” and I don’t want to enter your abdominal cavity during development of the pelvic space. However, after surgery with diligent use of the vaginal dilators you can augment that depth and may reach another inch or so. Regardless of what technique is used, if you do not dilate several times a day for 15 minutes each session, you will lose depth and width. It is not enough to say I am having regular intercourse, as relationships sometimes are inconsistent. A natal woman’s vagina has a smooth muscle lining and is held up many suspensory ligaments. Yours lacks the smooth muscle lining unless you have a colonic vaginoplasty and even=then, dilation is helpful, as nature abhors a vacuum.
Please emphasize to your transgender surgeon how important it is for you to have sufficient vaginal depth after Male to Female Surgery.
