Male to female transgender vaginoplasty post-op care

Dr. Reed, What male to female transgender surgery post -op instructions do you provide for a smooth recovery? Cathy

Dear Cathy,

Anticipate staying in Miami for a good week after surgery, so I can remove the vaginal packing show you and a friend how to dilate.  You will need to dilate daily or wear a soft mold to maintain your vaginal depth.

You will need to sit on a ring or U-shaped pillow for 5 weeks after surgery or risk splitting your incision line.

You can return to an office environment in about 3 weeks after surgery, but no work involving physical labor such as lifting, bending, stooping or straining for 7 weeks, lest you risk vaginal prolapse.

Your catheter is removed on the 12th post-op day. We can show you how to do that.

No anal sex (ever) as you risk a rectal vaginal fistula.

Sutures are removed 2 weeks after surgery.

These are the general guidelines. Please visit our web-site srsMiami.com/vagionoplasty (scroll down) for before and after pictures of male to female transgender surgery.  Hope you like what you see.

Cordially,

Harold M. Reed, M.D.
