What is the average MTF vaginoplasty depth for your patients?

Dr Reed,

Thank you so much for getting back to me, and for answering my questions. I have a few more if you’d be so kind 

I read on your site that you have a procedure to add depth to the neo vagina without a colon graft. Can you explain how that procedure works?

What is the average vaginoplasty depth for your patients?

Lisa

Dear Lisa,

MTF vaginoplasty depth expectation is a concern for most MTF transgender patients.

As a general rule during creation of the pelvic space which is the step preceding inverting penile skin with or without a graft, we do not want to enter the abdominal cavity. Your vaginal depth at the time of surgery is usually your height in feet expressed as inches and your inches expressed as a fraction of 12. So if you are 5′ 6″ tall, the space will be about in 5 inches plus 6/12 inches, or 5 and 1/2 inches deep. If you are 6 feet tall the space will be about 6 inches deep. Hope that makes sense.

Remember, a patient can’t say ouch in the operating room. However once the penile skin and or graft is inserted you can stretch the neo- vagina with dilations, and realistically gain another inch or so.

Hope that answers your question about depth. Remember the average Oriental has an erection about
5″ long, Caucasians about 5 1/2″ long and Afro Americans about 6 inches long. Equally important is that you look sexually stimulating both to yourself and your partner. We want you to be a “turn on”.

Cordially,
