Will you accept my BC for MTF vaginoplasty?

Dr. Reed,  Was happy to learn my Blue Cross policy will pay for MTF transgender sex change vaginoplasty.  Will you accept the insurance?   Liz

Dear Liz,

We are not contracted providers with any insurance company, because they insist we accept their payment or portion of it as payment in full,  which usually amounts to 10 to 15 cents on the dollar. Please ask around and see if other experience transgender surgeons will work for less than 1500. Careful surgery including the immediate postoperative period (the amount of time I need to be in the holding area, operating room, and following you in the recovery room) is a good 6 hours.  You don’t want a surgeon to walk away the moment the dressing is on.  Then I need to follow you daily for a good 7 days.

But here’s the good news.  I believe our regional hospital accepts your insurance, and I will verify this.  If they do, you’ve got the facility fee and anesthesia covered, and we’ll reduce our fee by several thousands of dollars.  A big savings for an affordable vaginoplasty.  Think of it as a vaginoplasty grant.

You are welcome to confer with your insurance company to see if they will reimburse you.  You are certainly allowed to ask the same question we do.  “How much?”   Meanwhile, check out our before and after vaginoplasty photos on our web-site  Hope you like what you see.
