Dear Dr. Reed,
Going on a feminizng hormone program with you shortly, and thinking ahead to an orchiectomy. Do you suggest I consider cryopreservation of a seminal specimen? Angela
This is a very good idea. One lab in south Florida has been referred to you, IVF Florida Reproductive Associates. Perhaps the best time to produce a specimen is before going on estrogens, as the seminal quality may be affected. If you are contemplating cryopreservation, the sperm bank will need to ask, do you have a female companion who may become the bearer of your children, or are you thinking of a surrogate gestational carrier. If the latter, the FDA has rules in place to protect that carrier from receiving a sexually transmitted disease. This means 7 days before fertilization, you need to have a battery of about 8 blood tests to rule out the presence of STD’s such a syphilis, HIV, chlamydia, etc.
I will be happy to provide a requisition for these tests, which are done at Unilab, in Ft. Lauderdale.
